* Huntington disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder. It progressively destroys both mind and
body, eventually taking away the ability to speak, walk, and even eat without help. HD results
from the degeneration of neurons in certain areas of the brain causing uncontrolled movements,
loss of intellectual faculties, and emotional disturbances – and ultimately leads to total
incapacitation and death.

HD is also a disease of families. Every child of a person with HD has a 50%risk of inheriting the disease, and all family members have the burden of watching their loved ones slowly die. One in every 10,000 Americans has Huntington disease, but one in every 1,000 Americans are touched by HD, whether they have the disease themselves, look after someone who does, or have a friend or relative with HD.

Primarily, HD affects adults. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 30 and 45, but the
disease can first appear in children as young as 5, or in adults in their 70s. Genetic testing can be
performed to determine whether the child carries the defective gene.

HD remains incurable, and there are currently no effective treatments. But hope for a cure has
never been more real. In 2006 Canadian researchers were able to stop the progression of HD in
mice. This is the first time in the world such a breakthrough has been possible. This incredible
research offers real hope that the disease can be cured in humans.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!

I thank you again,
